The Breitling Emergency is the pilot's watch Breitling introduced in 1995, reference A73321, built around a radio transmitter that broadcasts on the international 121.5 MHz civil-aviation distress frequency, deployable by unscrewing and extending an antenna from the case. The idea traces to founder-chairman Ernest Schneider's attendance at a NATO conference on emergency beacons in the mid-1980s, developed afterward with an electronics partner into a wrist-worn locator backup. Two British military pilots credited the watch with aiding their rescue after a 2003 helicopter crash in Antarctica. Breitling later sold the watch to civilians willing to sign a waiver accepting liability for the cost of a triggered rescue, and in 2013 replaced it with the Emergency II, a titanium reissue with a dual-frequency Cospas-Sarsat-monitored beacon and a COSC-certified SuperQuartz chronometer movement, pictured here.
