The Cartier Crash is the asymmetric, seemingly molten wristwatch that Cartier London released in 1967, credited to the workshop's Rupert Emmerson under Jean-Jacques Cartier. Two origin stories have followed it ever since: that it echoes the melting clocks of Salvador Dalí, and that it was modelled on a Baignoire deformed in a car crash and brought back to the Bond Street shop. Neither is settled. The London cases ran about 43 mm long and 25 mm wide, were made by hand with the dial numerals painted after the manual-wind LeCoultre movement was fitted, and first-series examples are believed to number fewer than a dozen. London built them to order until 1994; Paris issued a smaller 38.5 by 22.5 mm edition of 400 in 1991. (Phillips; Sotheby's)
