IWC Special Watch for Pilots
More actions
The IWC Special Watch for Pilots (reference 436) is IWC's very first pilot's watch, introduced in 1936 at the urging of company head Ernst Jakob Homberger's two aviator sons. Uncommonly large for its day at about 38 mm in steel, it answered the demands of open-cockpit flight: a rotating bezel with an arrow index for timing short intervals such as takeoff, an antimagnetic escapement, shatterproof glass, and a matte black dial with high-contrast luminous numerals and hands. It was built to keep time reliably from −40 to +40 degrees Celsius. Hand-wound and purpose-built, it established the legibility-first character that would later branch into IWC's Big Pilot and Mark families. (IWC, Monochrome)
