The Samsung Galaxy Gear is Samsung's first-generation smartwatch, launched in September 2013 as model SM-V700. A 1.63-inch, 320 × 320 Super AMOLED touchscreen sits in a metal case on a rubber strap whose clasp houses a 1.9-megapixel camera, while a 315 mAh battery and 800 MHz processor deliver only about a day of use. It paired over Bluetooth with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone to relay notifications, calls and voice commands rather than running on its own. Bulky, dependent on a nearby phone and short on battery life, the Gear was a rough first effort, yet it helped establish the modern wrist-worn smartwatch. (GSMArena)
