The Waltham Railroad name covers the open-face pocket watches the American Waltham Watch Company built for railroad use, beginning with the Model 1870 Crescent Street. The Smithsonian dates its example to about 1870 and records that Waltham advertised the Crescent Street as a railroad watch in June 1871, specifically recommending it to railway engineers and travelers. (Smithsonian Institution) The line's jeweled movements and Arabic-numeral dials became a standard for reliable American pocket watches into the twentieth century.
