Cartier Ballon Bleu
More actions
The Cartier Ballon Bleu is the round Cartier introduced in 2007, named for the way its case swells into a rounded, pebble-like dome: a "blue balloon", after the blue sapphire cabochon set in its crown. Reference W69012Z4 is the 42 mm steel automatic powered by Cartier caliber 049. (Sotheby's) That crown is the design's signature: a curved guard arcs over it and onto the dial, so the winding cabochon sits recessed inside the case rather than proud of it, and the Roman-numeral dial is notched to make room. It comes in a wide range of sizes and metals, quartz and automatic, which makes it a default modern Cartier: recognisable, expensive, and unshowy, the register a Succession costume department reaches for when the point is understatement.
