Casio CGW-50
More actions
The Casio CGW-50 Cosmo Phase is a round black-resin digital watch Casio released in 1989 on module 830, and one of the most ambitious consumer complications the brand ever miniaturized. Its Solar System mode drives an animated planetarium: the display plots all nine then-recognized planets, Pluto included, plus Halley's Comet, for any date between 1901 and 2200, and runs the model forward or backward across that span. Dedicated modes flag the dates of Halley's closest approaches and of total solar eclipses. Sold largely in the Japanese domestic market and never widely distributed, it is now scarce, part of why its appearance on Jake Gyllenhaal's wrist in Donnie Darko (2001), a film preoccupied with time and predestination, reads as a pointed prop choice.
