Casio W-71
More actions
The Casio W-71 is a resin-cased digital alarm chronograph built on module 549: a 1/100-second stopwatch, multi-function alarm, hourly signal and an auto-calendar, rated to 50 m and running years on a single CR2016. Black case, blue dial accents, a two-line LCD. It is the pharmacy-counter Casio that cost about what a week of school lunches did, which is precisely why it suits Napoleon in Napoleon Dynamite (2004). Director Jared Hess built the film on studied anachronism, and the W-71 reads as a watch bought in rural Idaho years earlier and never reconsidered; the film gives it a small continuity slip, the on-wrist date jumping between shots minutes apart. Its screen life earned it the collector nickname "the Napoleon Dynamite Casio." (WatchReel, Digital-Watch.com)
