Ebel was founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1911 by Eugène Blum and his wife Alice Lévy, its name an acronym of "Eugène Blum et Lévy." The maison built a business supplying movements to other Swiss houses, including the quartz calibres inside Cartier's Must de Cartier line, and under CEO Pierre-Alain Blum in the 1980s became known for the architect-inspired "wave" integrated bracelet and a 1982 chronograph built on leftover Zenith El Primero movements, sold first as the Sport Classic and renamed 1911 in 1986.
