The Rolex Chronograph 6238 is the last of the smooth-bezel chronographs collectors call pre-Daytonas: a 36 mm Oyster case, three registers, and a Valjoux 72-based manual calibre, produced through most of the 1960s with the tachymeter printed on the dial's rim rather than the bezel. The Cosmograph 6239 that followed moved that scale onto the bezel and took the Daytona name. The example Eon Productions bought at Bucherer in Interlaken in October 1968 for On Her Majesty's Secret Service carries a silver dial and a red centre chronograph hand no catalog 6238 wore (reportedly a production request), making George Lazenby's the only Rolex chronograph in the Eon series; it sold at Christie's London in 2003 for £23,400.
