John Merivale (1917–1990) was a Canadian-born British stage and screen actor, the son of actors Philip Merivale and Viva Birkett and stepson of Gladys Cooper. Educated at Rugby and Oxford, he worked steadily in supporting film roles, including Major Sloane, whose theft of a hieroglyphic message opens Stanley Donen's Arabesque (1966), while remaining best remembered as Vivien Leigh's longtime companion and caretaker until her death in 1967.
