Philippe Noiret (1 October 1930 – 23 November 2006) was a French actor whose nearly 60-year career ran to more than 130 films, from his breakout as Uncle Gabriel in Zazie dans le métro (1960) through two César Awards for Best Actor, for the title role in Le Vieux Fusil (1975) and for Life and Nothing But (1989), to an international audience as Alfredo in Cinema Paradiso (1988) and Pablo Neruda in Il Postino (1994).
