Rod Serling (1924–1975) was an American screenwriter, playwright and television producer, a paratrooper in the Pacific war who became the conscience of live television with Patterns and Requiem for a Heavyweight before creating, writing most of and hosting The Twilight Zone, the anthology whose clipped on-camera narrations made him one of the most recognisable figures of the medium; he later hosted Night Gallery and co-wrote Planet of the Apes.
