Rudolf Nureyev (1938–1993) was a Soviet-born ballet dancer and choreographer, widely regarded as the preeminent male ballet dancer of the 20th century. He defected to the West in 1961, danced with The Royal Ballet, and later directed the Paris Opera Ballet. His rare film-acting roles include the title part in Ken Russell's Valentino (1977).
