A Dog of Flanders (1975)

Nippon Animation's Dog of Flanders (フランダースの犬), directed by Yoshio Kuroda and adapting Ouida's 1872 novel, aired on Fuji Television from January 5 to December 28, 1975, as the first entry in the long-running World Masterpiece Theater anthology. It follows orphaned Nello Daas and his grandfather Jehan, milk-delivery workers near Antwerp, Belgium, who rescue an abandoned dog named Patrasche; the story traces Nello's hardship and his devotion to Patrasche and to Rubens' cathedral paintings, culminating in the anime's famous tragic finale.
