Natsume's Book of Friends is a Japanese manga series by Yuki Midorikawa, adapted into an anime television series by Brain's Base (later Shuka) that premiered July 8, 2008, on TV Tokyo. It follows orphaned teenager Takashi Natsume, who inherits a notebook of yōkai names from his late grandmother, and Madara, a powerful cat-like spirit who nicknames himself "Nyanko-sensei" and agrees to protect Natsume in exchange for the notebook after his death.
