A Dirty Job (2006)

From IMWDb
A Dirty Job

Christopher Moore's comic novel, published by William Morrow in 2006, is set in San Francisco. Charlie Asher is a fairly normal man with a wife who loves him for it and a first child on the way, until people start dropping dead around him and a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets: Charlie, it seems, has been recruited for a new position, as Death. Watches

TAG Heuer (unidentified model)
Charlie Asher notices that the handle of a compact umbrella sticking out of a stranger's satchel at a cash machine is glowing red. The stranger is William Creek, a thirty-two-year-old market analyst on his way to the financial district. When Charlie calls after him at Columbus and Vallejo, Creek looks down at the satchel, catches his heel on the curb and steps back into the path of the number forty-one bus. His belongings scatter down the street, a Tag Heuer watch among them, some coming to rest nearly a block away. The maker is named; the model is not.

Source text: His belongings—the satchel, the umbrella, a gold tie bar, a Tag Heuer watch—skittered on down the street, ricocheting off tires, shoes, manhole covers, some coming to rest nearly a block away. (Christopher Moore, A Dirty Job, scan cataloged as William Morrow, 2006, p. 21; Creek is named on p. 20; Internet Archive scan OCR)
