Kay Williams and Eileen Wyman's suspense novel is set in an off-Broadway theater company in Hell's Kitchen in 1985 and 1986, where the actress Lee Fairchild runs the office, the director Ernst Kromer drives the cast, a derelict is found dead and an unknown hand is working against the company. Michael Day, the composer Lee has fallen for, leaves for Los Angeles for an operation. (Open Library)

- After Michael disappears through the airport doors, Lee sits at the wheel with her coat sleeve pulled up and looks at his parting gift, an elegant Gucci with a black face and gold hands and numbers; "It matches mine," he had said, holding out his arm. Days later, when the hospital has never heard of Michael Day or Miguel Diaz, it is six o'clock by her Gucci and the watch hangs in the corner of her eye like a black moon ringed with gold. The maker is named; the model is not.
