Chiefs (1981)

From IMWDb
Chiefs

Stuart Woods's first novel, published in March 1981 and read here in the Signet paperback of July 2005, follows three police chiefs of Delano, Georgia, across four decades, from the body of a boy found in the winter of 1920. Its third book belongs to Tucker Watts, who retires from a thirty-year Army career to become, as a television report in the novel puts it, the first black chief of police in any town of the Old South. Watches

Rolex watch
Once the Delano job is his, Major Tucker Watts retires from the Army. At a small party at the Fort McPherson officers' club he is given a Rolex wristwatch and his wife Elizabeth a set of gardening tools, the best the post exchange had to offer, the base commander says some nice things about his work, and by evening they are civilians. The gift is told in one paragraph of summary narration. The maker is named; the model is not.
