Ingersoll watch: McPhearson explains the rise of the dollar watch, Ingersoll's Waterbury-backed production, and the later Radiolite watch made for wartime legibility. Christopher's question about cheap watches leads McPhearson from the dollar watch's factory production to the problem of reading a dial in wartime darkness. The Radiolite enters the dialogue as an answer to soldiers' night-time needs. It is part of a watchmaking lesson, rather than a watch Christopher is described as wearing.
