Ed Gorman's thriller, published by DAW Books in 1998, follows Michael Coffey, a former Chicago homicide detective who drives a Windy City cab after his police career ended the night he killed the escaped murderer of his wife and daughter. A young woman with no memory turns up at Sister Mary Agnes's shelter with expensive clothes and over a thousand dollars in her wallet, a man is found stabbed in a motel room, and Coffey, who takes her in, is drawn into the troubles of Jenny Stafford, daughter of a wealthy Chicago family. Watches
- Bulova (unidentified model)
- Priscilla Bowman, the slender, elegant psychiatrist treating Jenny Stafford, ends an hour of divorce-day monotony with Heather Tompkins, a patient who wants her approval for going to a high school reunion alone, when her small gold Bulova wristwatch discreetly chimes the hour. At the door Heather says she hates the thing: if it is going to ring it should ring, and its tiny noise is irritating. Moments later a caller tells Priscilla that Jenny is all over the news. The maker is named; the model is not.
