Dead Air (1998)

From IMWDb
Dead Air

Charles Jaco's first novel, published by Ballantine Books in June 1998, is set in the summer of 1990, when someone is covertly selling Saddam Hussein the chemicals for biological weapons. The veteran television correspondent Peter Dees seizes the story, but his sources are shot one by one, and a secret in a murdered producer's computer file takes him and the producer Melinda Adams from Port-au-Prince and Cairo to Saudi Arabia and Iraq. TAG Heuer (unidentified model)
In a hotel bar in Haiti, Dees's producer Richard Marmelstein, sweating over a club soda, says somebody is trying to kill him, pushes his laptop against Dees's leg and goes to fetch a tape from his room. The waiter everyone calls Tigwo follows him across the dark courtyard and shoots him on the stairs. He gathers the two spent casings, takes the room key and a wad of bills from the dead man's pocket, removes his chunky Tag Heuer and runs up to room 209. The maker is named; the model is not.

Source text: He removed Marmelstein’s chunky Tag Heuer watch, then sprinted up the stairs to room 209. (Charles Jaco, Dead Air, scan cataloged as Ballantine Books, 1998, p. 8, where the OCR drops the apostrophe in "Marmelstein’s"; Internet Archive scan OCR)
