Robert K. Tanenbaum's legal thriller, published by Pocket Books in 2001, is one of his novels about Butch Karp, chief assistant district attorney for New York County, and his wife, Marlene Ciampi. A black man is shot in the back by a police officer and the city erupts, while in a second case a slow-witted young man faces the death penalty for the murder of a Jewish diamond merchant, both in an election year. Watches
- Hamilton (unidentified model)
- Karp sits in a rear pew at Zion Baptist through a long service that McBright has brought him to, checking his watch discreetly and then again as a soloist sings "Take My Hand, Precious Lord". It is still the old, beat-up gold Hamilton he has worn since law school; a Rolex Oyster with diamonds stays at home in a drawer (pp. 309 to 310, in a sentence the OCR loses part of at the page turn). Elsewhere in the novel a gold Lady Rolex found in the pocket of Ramsey, the man Sybil Marshak shot, and traced by its serial number to a warehouse theft at JFK, is a clue the prosecutors argue over (pp. 188, 344). The maker is named; the model is not.
