Benjamin Cheever's 1999 satire follows Noel Hammersmith, an overweight editor of diet books who tells a psychiatrist that what he really wants is to be a household name, and around whom people begin to die. Much of it is Noel's journal, which his therapist Cleo has told him to keep daily so that he stops losing whole days. (Open Library)
