Friend (1985)
More actions

Diana Henstell's novel was published by Bantam in 1985; Bantam later reissued it as Deadly Friend, the title under which Open Library files the work. Paul Conway, a boy genius everyone calls Piggy, moves with his mother, Jeannie, to Welling, where she has a teaching post at Mason, the school he will attend, and brings with him BeeBee, the robot he built. When BeeBee is smashed with a shotgun and Sam, the girl across the street, dies, Piggy puts the robot's computer into her brain. (Open Library)
Watches
- Timex (unidentified model)
- Piggy's Timex glows in the dark. After a terrifying blackout in the chamber of horrors at a school dance, he comes round on the dead grass outside the gym, with his friend Slime leaning over him, and reads on the watch that twenty minutes have gone by. On another night he has left it off and, under the bleachers, it could be any time (p. 160). With Sam hidden in a shed after his experiment, he keeps sneaking glances at the Timex through a school day whose hands will not move (p. 189). The maker is named; the model is not.
