Vaddey Ratner's 2012 debut novel, drawn from her own childhood, follows seven-year-old Raami as the Khmer Rouge drive her family, minor Cambodian royals, out of Phnom Penh and into the labor camps. Her father's watch is one of the objects that measures the loss. (Open Library)
