Tananarive Due's novel was published by Atria Books in 2005. Phoenix Smalls, a young R&B singer signed to the rap star G-Ronn's Three Strikes label and managed by her father, Marcus, makes a chance visit to a historical site in St. Louis, the Scott Joplin House, and begins a series of encounters, as the jacket puts it, with a spirit who may be the King of Ragtime. Watches
- Rolex watch
- Phoenix's Rolex has a diamond bezel and dial; it is the only gift she has accepted from Ronn, and the most expensive thing she owns, worth more than her car and keyboards together. On the visit to St. Louis it feels like stolen property on her knobby wrist (p. 74). When she tells Ronn they can only be friends, she fumbles to unfasten it to give it back, and he tells her to keep it as a welcome-to-the-label gift (p. 105). Later she reckons it at eight thousand dollars (p. 190). The maker is named; the model is not.
