Love This Stranger (1989)

Linda Shaw's Silhouette Special Edition, published in 1989, opens with a helicopter carrying Mary Smith, the nutritionist at the Chateau St. Murren ski resort, from the Austrian border to a Zurich hospital with Jed Kilpatrick, the resort's moody American house physician, at her side. Mary is pregnant, and Haman Stone, who conducts the staff meetings, is remaking St. Murren for a richer clientele; the author's note places Shaw, a musician and mother of three, in Keene, Texas. Raymond Weil watch: At the Tuesday staff meeting in one of the resort's baroque bars, Mary, in a lab coat and an unflattering braid, sees Jed for the first time looking the doctor he is: hair freshly trimmed, an expensive Austin Reed suit, an Ungaro knit, chukka boots to soften the establishment impression, and a Swiss Raymond Weil wristwatch as his only jewellery. He sprawls low in his chair turning a key end over end while Haman Stone fences with Scutter Brown over Brown's students, then speaks up for the students himself. The text names the maker only.
