Gene Thompson's first novel is a story of witchcraft in San Francisco. Emily Blake moves into a house where a knocking begins that her old neighbour Mrs. Prentice tells her to ignore, and a search for a pair of lost earrings takes her to a man named Lupe. The book prints incantations from the Grand Clavicle of Solomon and a set of questions once put to accused witches. (Open Library)

Policewoman Mildred Theale empties her purse onto the sergeant's desk and starts with the jewelry: she takes the gold Omega with its scratched crystal from Emily's wrist, holds it up for everyone to see, then pulls off the wedding band inscribed AVO. Emily begins to cry. The maker is named; the model is not.
