T. J. MacGregor's novel of suspense, a Ballantine paperback whose first edition is dated March 1989, belongs to her series about the married private investigators Quin St. James and Mike McCleary. McCleary is found in a motel room beside a dead woman, with a knot on his skull, a hypnotic drug in his blood and no memory of the victim or of his own name, and Quin has to prove him innocent. Watches
- Rolex watch
- A Rolex is the thread of Quin's investigation. McCleary's client said he lost one when a woman rolled him outside a Lauderdale nightclub, McCleary borrowed one from his friend Derwin Cody to look the part at the same club, and a third robbed man had one too, so Quin concludes that the watch is how a gang of women picks its marks (pp. 140, 162 to 164). To prove it she poses as one of them and takes a box of goods from vice's drug raids, a Rolex among them, to the gang's buyer in the back of a van; he examines the watch under a magnifying glass and finds no identification on it. No model is named, and the Rolexes of the robberies are reported in dialogue.
