Greg Johnson's novel was published by Dutton in 1993. Janice Rungren and Clifford Bannon meet as third-graders in a Catholic school in East Texas in the early 1960s, and the novel follows them, by the jacket's account, from Kennedy's Camelot to the age of AIDS. Clifford's mother has brought him there from their big house in Highland Park, in Dallas. (Open Library)
Watches
- Timex (unidentified model)
- Clifford's Timex was his father's First Holy Communion gift, given at a brunch at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, to his mother's angry dismay. It ticks loudly. With Janice instead of in the schoolyard, he reads 12:40 on it with twenty minutes of after-lunch recess left (p. 30); he glances at it surreptitiously at 8:45, when Ted is already waiting (p. 48); in a taxi he takes his old Timex out of his jeans pocket to find Janice ten minutes late (p. 86). The maker is named; the model is not.
