Raven (1985)

Mike Lundy, a former New York police officer according to the paperback cover, wrote this novel about Detective Fred Raven, whom the jacket introduces as hustler, lecher, wiretapper and grafter, and his partner Higgins, more of the same. It opens in the late 1960s with a couple parked in Van Cortlandt Park after seeing Rosemary's Baby; the girl is raped and murdered and the boy, William Lamps, is accused of killing her. Omega (unidentified model): On a day at home, after the family cat Fluffy, with whom he has an old feud, is taken ill and Raven tells the vet Dr. Skinner to put it down the minute the bill passes thirty dollars, he buys the children an ice cream soda, goes home and dresses: a black Turkish mohair suit, ultra-white shirt, diamond-and-gold cuff-links and the Omega he is particularly fond of, two-hundred-dollar Bally shoes rubbed with a rag, a red-and-black striped tie. He takes twenty-five hundred dollars from a pile hidden under his shorts, kisses the kids goodbye and drives to his parents' apartment in Stuyvesant Town, where he hands his mother a thousand of it before his plans for dinner. The maker is named; the model is not.
