Alison Gaylin's suspense novel, published by Harper in 2014, features Brenna Spector, a New York investigator of missing persons whose memory holds the exact dates of her life and whose older sister, Clea, disappeared when Brenna was a child. While Brenna works the case of a real estate agent three years missing and worries about her daughter, Maya, someone leaves a brown paper grocery bag outside her apartment door. (Open Library)
Watches
- Swatch watch
- Coming home exhausted, Brenna finds the bag outside her door and unpacks it: girls' jeans, pink tennis socks, an Elvis Costello T-shirt, a pink and white hair band, a purple Swatch watch, a sewing kit, a traveler's map, the lace-sleeved denim jacket she once begged to borrow for a sixth-grade dance, and at the bottom the driver's license of seventeen-year-old Clea Marie Spector. The bag is from Alpha Beta, a West Coast grocery chain that folded in 1995. Later Brenna lays the same items, "the purple Swatch" among them, out for Nick Morasco. The maker is named; the model is not.
Source text: Quickly, she pulled the rest of the items out of the bag: A pink and white hair band. A purple Swatch watch, a portable sewing kit, a traveler’s map of the U.S...
