The Ancestral Suitcase (1996)

Sylvia Fraser's novel, published by Key Porter Books in Toronto in 1996, follows Nora Locke, who clears out her dead mother's house in Hamilton with the help of a junk man named Luigi Lorenzini and flies to England with an old suitcase bearing a Canadian Pacific Steamlines sticker, bound for the coal-mining town of Barrow. At the Wolfe Inn Moon her clothes are found in the ancestral suitcase, the rates are quoted in shillings and the Barrow Times on the desk is dated Monday, June 23, 1913. Timex (unidentified model): Nora's Timex is the instrument of the novel's time slip. She checks it at almost six in her mother's living room as the junk man's truck pulls away, at 4:15 when she wakes on the flight, and at 8:15 p.m. in her room at the Wolfe Inn Moon, working out that it is 3:15 in the afternoon at home. The next morning, as St. Michael's bell tower chimes eight, she glances at her wrist and finds only a ghostly imprint where the Timex should be; in the coal-mining Bottoms she consults it again out of habit before remembering it is gone, and returns to find a suede satchel of old coins and a newspaper dated 1913 in place of her shoulder bag. The maker is named; the model is not.
