Greg Flynn's 2005 novel puts the New York private eye John Docker in blockaded Berlin in 1948, hunting a relic called the Cross of Christ, alongside Captain Beauchamp of the British military police, who wants the killers of the Nazi atomic scientist Friedrich Kessler, found tortured in a bombed-out hotel. Beauchamp brings Kessler's daughter Elsa a piece of evidence. (Open Library)

- Elsa has just described her father as a man loyal to luxury and the highest bidder when Beauchamp takes a glassine bag from his holdall. Inside is a Longines with a distinctive combination square and round face: her father's watch, found on Jean-Pierre Gambon, an enforcer for black marketeers now lying in the British Army morgue. Wearing it, Beauchamp says, was either stupidity or arrogance. The maker is named; the model is not.
