Varley O'Connor's novel follows the Hatherfords of rural Bergen County, New Jersey, from the Depression through the Second World War: Vern, the owner of a Ford dealership, his wife Maeve, their son Scott, who contracts polio at three, an older son who goes to war, and the twelve-year-old Patsy, who watches her family come apart. The author's note says the doctor, Mat Wayne, is drawn from the writings of William Carlos Williams. (Open Library)
