Anthony Glyn's 1969 novel follows a wealthy American chess patron, Mrs. Oppenheimer, who discovers a prodigy in Isfahan and brings him to New York to make him a champion. Watches are among the first things the boy, Jeff, acquires. (Open Library)

- Mrs. Oppenheimer offers Jeff a gold Rolex on a gold bracelet if he wins the U.S. Open, pointing at her own wrist. By the time of the championship he owns two watches, one bought in Tehran and a Rolex skin-diving model bought in New York, and studies his Rolex with such concentration during Carl Sandbach's game that she wonders if he is timing his breathing. The brand is named; the model is not.
