The Mammoth Book of Historical Crime Fiction (2011)

From IMWDb
The Mammoth Book of Historical Crime Fiction

Mike Ashley's anthology, published by Robinson in Britain and Running Press in the United States in 2011, collects crime stories set from Bronze Age Britain to the 1930s, nearly all written for it, by writers including Steven Saylor, Anne Perry, Peter Tremayne and Tom Holt. Richard A. Lupoff's "Dead of Winter", set in the run-up to the Second World War and drawn, the editor notes, on real Nazi activity in the United States, features his detective Caligula Foxx and Foxx's assistant, Andy Winslow. Watches

Longines watch
Answering the brass gryphon knocker of Caligula Foxx's house on West Adams Place early one snowy Sunday morning, in his Buck Rogers pyjamas, Winslow checks his Longines wristwatch and decides the hour is perhaps not so ungodly after all. He opens the door on a speeding car, probably a LaSalle coupé, and a young woman in a Postal Telegraph messenger's uniform who collapses into the foyer, shot through the head as she knocked. The maker is named; the model is not.
