The Master Sniper (1980)

From IMWDb
The Master Sniper

Stephen Hunter's first novel was published by William Morrow in 1980. In London in 1945 James Leets, an office-bound analyst of the OSS, becomes convinced that the collapsing Third Reich is preparing one last operation built round a special man and a special rifle: Repp of the Waffen SS, the Master Sniper, and a weapon code-named Vampir. Watches

Bulova (unidentified model)
Waiting among teenage paratroopers before a night parachute drop, Leets turns his wrist over: twenty-two hundred hours, his Bulova announces in iridescent hands, and he runs through his kit again. At the climax, crouched against a convent wall at first light, he watches its second hand drain the seconds before he must cross a hundred yards of open ground under Repp's rifle, and runs when the Bulova says it is time (pp. 282 to 283). The maker is named; the model is not.
