Marius Gabriel's thriller is a story of abduction, passion and betrayal. Mercedes Eduard, a wealthy woman of about fifty-five, receives a photograph of her daughter bound to a steel chair with the warning that going to the police will kill her; she engages Joaquin de Cordoba, a silver-haired Argentine who negotiates kidnappings for a living, while her daughter sickens in a cell. - Taking Meissen coffee in a saffron-and-yellow drawing room hung with a Victorian sunset, de Cordoba assesses the wealth on show and the two women in pastel linen: Maya Duran, a former model of about thirty, wears a diamond bracelet, and the older Mercedes Eduard an exquisite Baume & Mercier. Then he explains that kidnapping is a business, that the sellers will start with an impossible price, and that she must not abandon her bargaining position. The maker is named; the model is not.
