Sibella Giorello's first novel introduces Raleigh Harmon, an FBI agent and forensic geologist in Richmond, Virginia, assigned to find out how a white police officer and a young black man fell together from a rooftop in front of a crowd that saw nothing. Going through Detective Michael Falcon's papers at his widow's house, she thinks of what she has kept of her own father. (Open Library)

Timex (unidentified model): Raleigh understands Janine Falcon's reluctance to let her husband's files go, because a shoe box of her own holds David Harmon's cheap Timex with its smashed crystal, beside the papers she gathered from his desk the day after his murder. She saw the same model on sale at the drugstore around Father's Day and still cannot throw the broken one out. Near the end she pulls the box from under the bed and lays his things out on the floor. The maker is named; the model is not.
