To Do No Harm

Leslie Glass's novel of suspense, copyrighted in 1992 and published by Doubleday in its Perfect Crime line, is set in an affluent suburban obstetrics practice. Bettina Dunne, newly moved to the suburbs with her engineer husband, becomes a patient of Dr. Street, whose office manager, the nurse Isobel, sizes up every woman who comes through the door, while Isobel's new boyfriend, the lawyer Peter Balkan, has trouble of his own. Watches

Swatch watch
Taking the new patient's history, Isobel, who believes a woman's sexual satisfaction can be read in the jewelry she has been given, searches Bettina's hand for a diamond or a sapphire the size of a kidney bean and finds only a gold band, a Swatch watch on her wrist and big silver earrings. No jewelry to speak of, she decides, and feels superior. The maker is named; the model is not.

Source text: Bettina, however, had only a gold band on her ring finger, a Swatch watch on her wrist, and big silver dangling earrings on her ears. No jewelry to speak of. Swatch watch
Leaving Isobel's apartment after two in the morning, Peter is jumped beside the unimpressive car that has replaced his Ferrari by two men, Benny the Pipe and one called Smasher. He is ready to let them roll him, since all he carries is a twenty, a MasterCard, his driver's license and a thirty-nine-dollar Swatch, but they want to teach him a lesson instead and crack his ribs. The maker is named; the model is not.
