Camerer Cuss & Co. descends from Black Forest clockmaking families who brought the trade to London, opening the first shop under the name in Shepherd's Bush in 1879. At the outbreak of the First World War, with German-sounding names drawing hostility, the family anglicised Kuss to Cuss, and the altered spelling went onto the dials and clock faces thereafter.
