H. Stern is a Brazilian fine-jewellery house founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1945 by Hans Stern, a German-born refugee who began by trading the coloured semi-precious stones Brazil produces in quantity. Watches came later and remain secondary to the gemstone work: the house took Geneva's Grand Prix de la Ville in 1970 for its first watch, a geometric design unusual for the period, and has produced watches as jewellery objects since.
