Astro Boy

Osamu Tezuka's android-hero manga, known in Japan as Mighty Atom (鉄腕アトム), was serialized in Kobunsha's Shōnen from 1952 to 1968. It follows Astro Boy, an emotive robot boy built by scientist Umataro Tenma in place of his own dead son and later cared for by Professor Ochanomizu, as he uses his array of built-in powers to protect humans and robots alike. The character himself first appeared a year earlier, in 1951, as a supporting player in Tezuka's Ambassador Atom, before headlining his own series. (Wikipedia)
