Leiji Matsumoto's science fiction manga, first serialized in Weekly Shōnen King from January 1977, follows orphan Tetsuro Hoshino and the mysterious Maetel aboard the space train Galaxy Express 999, bound for a mechanized planet where he can trade his human body for an immortal machine one. It won the 1978 Shogakukan Manga Award and spawned a long-running anime television series and theatrical films. (Wikipedia)
