Go Nagai's super robot manga, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from October 1972, follows teenager Koji Kabuto as he pilots the giant robot Mazinger Z to defend Earth from Dr. Hell's mechanical beasts. Toei Animation's anime adaptation began airing on Fuji TV two months later, popularizing the "pilot rides inside the robot" formula that shaped the super robot genre and its many successors.
