AWAKE is Atsuhiro Yamada's 2020 feature directorial debut, loosely inspired by the fifth game of the 2015 Denou-sen human-versus-computer shogi match. Ryo Yoshizawa stars as Eiichi Kiyota, who abandons his dream of turning professional after losing to the prodigy Riku Asakawa (Tatsuya Wakaba), then rediscovers his ambition by writing AWAKE, a shogi-playing AI program that eventually earns him a rematch against Riku as a computer-shogi programmer rather than a player.
