Absence of Malice

A Miami liquor wholesaler with an organized-crime family finds his private life exposed after a headstrong newspaper reporter, misled by a leaking prosecutor, wrongly names him in a murder investigation. (Wikipedia) Directed by Sydney Pollack from a script by Kurt Luedtke, the film stars Paul Newman as Michael Gallagher and Sally Field as the reporter whose story upends his life; it was released by Columbia Pictures in December 1981 and earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Newman.
