On the Waterfront is Elia Kazan's 1954 crime drama, written by Budd Schulberg from the New York Sun's Pulitzer-winning "Crime on the Waterfront" series, about an ex-boxer turned Hoboken longshoreman who testifies against the mob-run union that killed a friend. Marlon Brando plays Terry Malloy, with Karl Malden as Father Barry, Lee J. Cobb as union boss Johnny Friendly, Rod Steiger as Terry's brother Charley and Eva Marie Saint, in her film debut, as Edie Doyle; Leonard Bernstein wrote his only original film score for it. Columbia Pictures released it on July 28, 1954, and it won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Brando. (Wikipedia)
Watches
- Unidentified watch
- Worn by Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy. In some scenes, though not all, Terry wears a plain wristwatch with a round, light-coloured dial on a smooth dark leather strap, visible when he raises his hand beside Edie in his buffalo plaid jacket. BAMF Style states that the watch is hardly seen well enough to identify and offers a Rolex only as a possibility, reasoning from Brando's lifelong attachment to the brand, which began with the Oyster Royalite his parents gave him in 1943, and floating the ref. 6062 moonphase of 1950 to 1953 as a candidate on that basis rather than from anything visible on the dial. The gold Vacheron Constantin Zsa Zsa Gabor gave Brando in June 1954 to mark his Oscar for this role is a personal gift after the fact, not the screen watch. (BAMF Style)
